Smith's (C. Shaler) formula

A formula for long timber columns:

$p={\frac {5000}{1+{\frac {1}{250}}{\frac {l^{2}}{d^{2}}}}}$

where

$p$ = ultimate compressive resistance in pounds per square inch

$l$ = length of column in inches

$d$ = least side of column section in inches
