Right-line formula

A column formula in which the allowable unit working stress is made to vary as the first power of l / r thus

$p=a-b{\frac {l}{r}}$

where

$p$ = allowable working stress

$a$ = allowable unit stress for short columns

$b$ = a constant

$l$ = length

$r$ = the least radius of gyration
