In timber construction, the large beam into which the common joists are framed in forming openings for stairs, chimneys, etc. A cross beam between and supported by two longitudinal beams, furnishing a rest for one or more intermediate short longitudinal beams. A stone or brick which has its greatest dimension perpendicular to the face of the wall.
