That process of producing steel from pig and scrap iron, in which the first step is to remove most of the silicon, manganese, and carbon from the molten mass. Just before tapping, spiegeleisen or an artificial ferromanganese is added to the charge in order to destroy the oxide slag and prevent red shortness. The furnace is lined with a silicious material.
